Bangladesh ranks about 40th in the world in terms of cement production,. Cement manufacturing is a highly fragmented business in Bangladesh. During the 1990s, many small cement companies entered the market as soon as the government started encouraging local production with a tariff differential favoring them. The cement industry was traditionally import driven with 95% of country’s cement imported from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea and China back in 1960s. However, over the last couple of decades, due to rapid pace of urbanization, industrialization, large-scale infrastructural projects and construction of various commercial and residential buildings, demand for cement has markedly increased. Bangladesh cement industry has enough room to grow as number of infrastructure development work is underway.
